great comedy from a great comedian

Quoting favorites from Lewis Black: In God We Rust

Tea Party: "...out of their double-wides to say, don't tax the rich..."
Sarah Palin: ...I would vote to Sarah Palin if she ran from Farmville..."

...master of my fate...

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

A Dream Within a Dream

 A Dream Within a Dream
by Edgar Allan Poe

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow:
You are not wrong who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand--
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep--while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Today's poem is in the public domain.

Our Misplaced, Undemocratic Budget Priorities: The Case of Keystone XL

Thank you for an excellent article Eleanor J Bader. It makes no economic sense to spend billions on a pipeline for a few hundred jobs and to keep spending on fossil fuels and billions in clean-up plus the irreparable destruction on the environment. Millions of jobs and  trillions of profit can be attained form high speed rail, investments and the funding of clean energy, renovating infrastructure and new buildings.

The Mayans in Georgia?

Parts of my novel have to do with mysteries of the past, and tonight right after I finished editing some chapters my husband and I were  flipping through channels when we came across an interesting show on the History Channel called America Unearthed that uncovers  evidence that Mayans were in Georgia before the American Indians: Lost Tribe Of Menehune.

Impatience

The slogan "Easy Does It" is one way we AA's remind each other
that many of us have tendencies at times to overdo things,
to rush heedlessly along, impatient with anything that slows down.
We find it hard to relax and savor life.
When one of us is in a dither to get something done or get somewhere in a hurry,
a friend may gently remonstrate,"'Easy Does It,' remember?"
Then there's often a flash of annoyance at the advisor.
And that indicates the advice must have hit home, wouldn't you say?
